Soil Based Substrates

The traditional growth medium that has been used for thousands of years to grow plants. Not strictly hydroponic but often referred to as when used in conjunction with watering systems, lightings, ventilation and other controlled growing environments. Using a sterilised soil is important. Sterilisation removes all life from the soil meaning you do not get any surprises popping up when you begin to cultivate plants in it.

Coco Based Substrates

Coco has been developed and created to fulfil all the requirements for the cultivating fast growing plants. In addition, the substrate can be used several times and is environmentally friendly. Coco is an organic product with a homogenous structure, free of chemical additives, harmful viruses and soil diseases. In contrast to coconut fibre, which is also used in horticulture, coco is free of fibre and comes in the form of fine flakes. Coco has a complex air/water system, which makes it superior to other substrates. Furthermore, it contains a special mould (Trichoderma), which can protect the plant against soil diseases.

Clay Pebble Substrates

Hydroton is a unique substrate for hydroponic gardeners. Hydroton is made from expanded clay in the form of round pebbles. Thanks to it's unique form, Hydroton keeps an excellent oxygen to water ratio which provides the best environment for great root development, excellent nutrient intake and lowers the risk of "root/pot bound" plants. Hydroton can be used as an indoor/outdoor main grow medium or mixed in with coco for better oxygen ratio and drainage. It is also recommended to place a layer of Hydroton at the base of each pot (especially soil) to increase drainage.

Provide aeration and drainage, retain and hold substantial amounts of water and later release it as needed, they are sterile and free from diseases, they have a fairly neutral pH (especially perlite which is neutral), and they are readily available, non-toxic, safe to use, and relatively inexpensive. Vermiculite is a member of the phyllosilicate group of minerals, resembling mica in appearance. It is found in various parts of the world, but currently the major mines are located in South Africa, China, Brazil, Zimbabwe, and the United States.
